Sustainable Living and Home Construction

Sustainable Living and Home Construction

In the current housing market, there are a few ‘non negotiables’ that are central to every quality building project. Quality Assurance (QA) is one of them and in the case of Highfields Builder it’s a key measure. However, in today’s blog we’re going to explore another key measure and a concept that has moved in recent years from the ‘building fringes’ to mainstream, and that’s Sustainable Living.

A quick Google search will result in pages of definitions and descriptions around Sustainable Living, but we prefer to describe it in terms of its relationship with the home building industry. In that regard we see Sustainable Living as being a home that helps reduce the carbon footprint, energy use, and consumption of its owners in addition to providing ‘livability’ and a quality of life. It really does encapsulate the Highfields Builder way of home building.

Sustainable Living the Highfields Builder way combines the homeowner’s vision and expectations with modern eco-friendly, low ‘footprint’, and energy efficient home design.

Some examples of how this translates into home design includes:

  • High grade insulation in the walls, ceiling and under floor to aid heating and cooling during the extremes of summer and winter and save on energy costs.
  • Double-glazed windows, tinting, or insulating window covers (blinds/curtains) for comfort and temperature control resulting in less reliance on air-conditioning.
  • External wall and roof colours to reduce heat absorption.
  • Considering the direction of the sun in the house design and it’s positioning on the block.
  • Installing modern 21st century appliances with high energy-efficiency ratings.
  • Using non-toxic building materials to reduce environmental impact on the block and nearby waterways.
  • Rainwater tanks for household use and garden maintenance.
  • Solar power to reduce energy consumption.

This list is just the start and it’s by no means exhaustive. The idea is to show how energy efficiency and Sustainable Living overall is central to a quality building design, and it doesn’t have to come at a high cost.

Quality construction outcomes in line with Sustainable Living concepts stem from well planned and organised building processes and the Highfields Builder team are committed to it. This blog isn’t intended to cover every facet of Sustainable Living and we’ve only provided a broad outline for you to consider. It’s just the start!
