Project Management and your  Home Building Project

Project Management and Home Building

We often talk about Quality Assurance, attention to detail, and professionalism, and how important they are to every construction project.  Your new home IS a structured building project.  Have no doubt about that!  So, the principles of professional project management apply to every new home built by Highfields Builder.

In today’s blog we’re going to touch on some basic project management principles and how they apply to your new home.  To start things off let’s break down the process a bit…….

  1. To ensure a successful project the builder should have a proper communication strategy to keep the home owner informed of the projects progression through to handover.  We’re sure you want to be kept informed so ask your builder up front about how they’ll keep you in the loop!

  1. After the formal quotation is accepted by the home owner and the contract is signed, the builder will prepare a project plan that covers a range of steps and strategies to bring the home from the concept stage to completion.  The project plan should include the house plans, specifications, inclusions, time frames, material requirements, co-ordination arrangements for other trades, and other important information relating to the project.  Think of it as a road map leading to the hand over day.

  1. The safety of staff, clients, and any site visitors is vitally important so a structured safety plan is another central part of the project.  Quality control inspections with safety protocols and checks are embedded in the planning and are completed at each stage to ensure consistency in building standards and exceptional safety standards.  The WHS plan is focused on minimum safety requirements and any specific strategies applicable to a construction site or location.

  1. Although a less structured part of the project planning, ‘Toolbox meetings’ are an important tool for managing the project and the work of all employees, contractors and suppliers.  Toolbox meetings with staff and contractors are held regularly and cover each person’s tasks in the project.  This process also helps them take responsibility for the quality of their own work.

  1. Highfields Builder also incorporates recommendations and best practice standards from the Master Builders Qld, QBCC, Toowoomba Regional Council, Engineers, Certifiers and Architects bringing additional value, quality, and sustainability features to all projects.
